Description
Interview with Beatrice Medicine picks up where 011 left off. Talks about a woman named Harriet, and a man named Clarence Sky who claims indigenous descent but who Medicine believes is not. Discusses a couple named Kathy and Forrest Hill. Medicine speaks dismissively of the United Sioux Tribes. They discuss Shirley Hill Witt, and Kahn-Tineta Horn, who are known to both Medicine and the interviewer. The recording pauses at Medicine’s request so she can share “gossip” about Horn off the record. When it resumes, they are discussing a singer named Buffy. Medicine discusses problems in tribal governance and sexism amongst the Sioux. Gerald One Feather is mentioned in a discussion of tribal housing. Medicine and the interviewer discuss plans to meet up at a sun dance celebration this summer. They discuss the Lower Sioux Reservation on the Minnesota river and the “Chicopee group outside Minneapolis” as very lonely, sparsely populated areas. They discuss a man named John Eagle Shield, who is training as a “religious figure” and his family in Little Eagle.
Recording resumes at 00:30:09 with Randy White, who says he is “bringing back pictographic drawing” and setting up a scholarship fund for indigenous people who want to go into fields like architecture and law. He claims he was born Randy White Horse [note: a New York Times article from June 12, 1991 names a “Randy Lee White” who also went by White Horse, who claimed to be Sioux but was in fact “a Texan with no Indian blood”]. Discusses his family, education, eventual involvement with Lloyd Newton and the Institute of Santa Fe. They discuss the hostility that people of white and indigenous descent face from both groups.
