Description
"The recording starts in the middle of a conversation, and their conversation seems to be happening in a place where people are eating.Unidentified male 1 talks about housing and jobs on reservations, the WPA, and what he perceives as the need for the development of industry on reservations. He and Josephy also discuss education and the interviewee’s opinions on local Native American culture.
Second section starts at 0:21:50 and continues until the end of the tape. Unidentified male 2 talks about his parents (both Oglala Lakota) and his own upbringing. He attended the University of South Dakota, then worked on the Titan Missiles and at Garrett AiResearch. He was drafted in 1965 and did a tour in France and Europe. He graduated from Sioux Falls college, then went on to a master’s program at Harvard University. He came back to South Dakota and worked in education on the Pine Ridge reservation, helping to increase salaries to encourage people to become teachers. Among the people who became teachers as a result were Chuck Conroy, Little Wound (?), Agnes Fernandez, and Margaret Cooney. He received a doctorate in education and at the time of the interview worked for the Rapid City Indian Service Council, which provides a variety of services ranging from health to GED support."
