"Unidentified speaker living on her own land. She leases it out to a man who runs his cattle, doesn’t lease for money but for other things.
Teaches Lakota culture and ethnobotany at the Standing Rock community college. Does not teach sacred knowledge – only common knowledge. Also teaches language.
Works with Standing Rock landowner's association.
Speaks about the rift between them and the “white-skinned Indians” (4:33)
Talks about the complexities of language, and the loss of that.
Her mother was never taken to a white boarding school – talks about the loss of culture that causes.
She is still optimistic for the future.
Talk of AIM
Her great grandmother was held as a prisoner at fort Thompson. The speaker was raised with these stories.
Asks about unity among Lakota Dakota people – she responds by says that it is a white mans way of looking at the issue.
Talk about IRA form of government.
US tried to say “Standing Rock Sioux” even though many including the speaker don’t identify as Standing Rock Sioux.
She is Ihanktowna. (20:39) Many of the reservation names were just given.
Difficult to get jobs if you are traditional.
Women always had a lot of status, but much of the history was written by men so that is not shown though the history.
