Summary
Draft for $125 submitted by Joseph Kirkland to Thomas Eddy, a New York reformer and philanthropist who in 1796 had been appointed one of three superintendents to the Brotherton Indians by the governor of New York. The payment was to cover Kirkland's salary as attorney to the Indians.
Biographical/Historical Note
Lawyer and politician. Nephew of Oneida missionary Samuel Kirkland, Joseph Kirkland, a Yale graduate trained in the law, settled in 1794 near his uncle in New Hartford, Oneida County, N.Y., and began to practice law. He served as a Federalist representative in the state assembly before moving to Utica, where he held numerous lacal, state, and national political offices.
