Summary Mainly minutes of the New York Council, Nov. 24, 1745-July 17, 1749. Also messages of Gov. George Clinton to the General Assembly and Council; resolutions, representations, and reports of both legislative bodies; Clinton's diary entries and his correspondence with Massachusetts governor William Shirley; and proceedings of meetings between Sir William Johnson, Gov. Clinton, and representatives of the Six Nations. Arranged chronologically, the contents relate primarily to the prosecution of the war against the French and to conflict between the governor and the legislature. Subjects include defending the frontier; maintaining the allegiance of the Iroquois; raising, provisioning, and paying militia troops; and cooperation among the colonies.
