Summary Notebook of José Rizal containing clinical notes and miscellaneous entries dated 1881 to 1887 in Manila, Madrid, and Berlin. The first 9 pages are minutes of the Academia de Ciencias filosófico-naturales, a society to which Rizal belonged while a student in Manila. As secretary of the organization, Rizal recorded the minutes of six meetings held during the academic years 1880-81 and 1881-82, beginning Feb. 10, 1881. The second section contains clinical notes made by Dr. Rizal in 1886-1887 in Madrid, beginning Oct. 4, 1886. The notes provide brief clinical histories of some of the patients he helped to treat, including diagnoses, descriptions of the surgical operations performed, outcome of the treatment, and sketches of affected body parts. There are also 4 pages of titles, probably books purchased by Rizal from Antonio Rosés; and a section of language exercises in German. Other materials include descriptions of fortifications, illustrated with sketches of parapets and stockade fences; copies in French--dated 1887 in Berlin--of letters, short essays on French novels, the French playwright Pierre Corneille, and the celebration of Palm Sunday; and a French translation of a Hans Christian Andersen tale. Rizal also copies a letter to a friend which contains a criticism of Rizal's first novel, Noli me tángere. The last section, written in English, is an account of the life and writings of James Thomson. There are also two indexes to the cases Rizal discusses.
