Summary Ms. narrative of the 1788 capture of Jane Gillespie Brown and other members of her immediate family by Cherokee and Creek Indians on the Tennessee River near the Cherokee town of "Nickajack". Also descriptions of events leading up to the family's captivity, ransom and release, and activities thereafter until 1850. Includes discussions of the Brown family's background, residence in Guilford county, N.C., Revolutionary War service, and post-captivity settlement on bounty lands in Tennessee. Joseph Brown's involvement in operations against the Cherokee (1794) and during the Creek War (1812-1813) is also noted. Indians and traders associated with the Brown family's captivity include John Vann, Thomas Tunbridge, Cutty-a-toy, Kiachatalee, and Alexander McGillivray.
