User-Contributed Transcription yyyyyyyyyyyyy Dear Jack: I feel like a heel for not having written before this - (to hell with this dammed machine. Now you must read my interestingly illegible script), and for not having returned your magazines to you. I have them neatly stacked in my office, from which I have never removed them, and i only need them now to check references. The book is just about done, alltho it's turned out to be a different sort of book than I had originally intended - not in every respect but in some respects. It is, I suppose, a chronicle of the impact of the idea of Communism {?} socialism on the { ? } writer. Half of it deals with the period before 1929, half (or maybe a little less) after 1929. I stop in the early 40's. Joe {Freeman} likes the first half but has misgivings about the second part - which seems to come down pretty much to intramural bickerings, ...series of disenchantment, ... sharpshooting, ideological careerism etc. Just to temper this {somberness} a little, I've inserted a chapter which will {open up? } the thirties - Part II of my book. There is a twist to the idealism and its magnanimity of the decade and a critique against those who would dismiss the {soldiers} as {crooks} and {murderers} - as if there were no objective reasons why anyone should want to reconstruct our society or oppose Hitler.
