Description Text on vellum in tightly-spaced rotunda script in dark brown, 40 lines per p.; lines of text ruled in red, within double-ruled red intersecting borders; large gilt capitals on alternating square panels of red or blue decorated with fine gilt penwork.
Large gold capital "D" on a shaded blue panel at beginning of text, feathered with acanthus leaves outlined in gilt; center of letter contains painting of a yellow bird and pink roses; first letters of text are gilt capitals on red and gold bands, alternating with bands of bright yellow; first lines of text ruled in gold; below is an elaborately-colored coat of arms in red, blue, gold, green, and white, with motto "Muere el hombre i viva el nombre" against a blue background dotted with small gold ornaments; facing p. contains a painting of the petitioner Barahona kneeling before the Virgin standing on a crescent moon, within a broad red border on three sides, and decorated with leaf motifs in gold and silver.
Last two leaves, bordered and ruled in red, are blank.
Contemporary dark brown calf, with two double-ruled borders in gold on both boards; four pair of gold-stamped corner fleurons with pomegrante motif; large gold-stamped foliated lozenge-shaped centerpiece; gold-ruled spine, with gold ornaments in each compartment; all edges gilt; twisted cord of red, green, yellow, and white threads in center gutter, to which is attached a pendant lead seal, embossed with the seated figure of King Philip IV in armor on one side, and the royal arms on the other.
Binding has been reinforced with fragments of ms. leaves of paper, with Latin text in brown and red.

Summary Petition for nobility status first presented to the Audiencia court in Granada--with Gaspar Navarrete serving as state's attorney--on April 28, 1553 by Juan Perez Barahona, resident of Archidona, and notary scribe for the court. In the customary manner, various witnesses are summoned to testify on behalf of Barahona, including Beatriz de Miranda, Catalina de Garay, María López de Cabalos, Rodrigo de Guadiana, Martín Alonso de Burgos, Fernando de Olivares, Iñigo de Lizola, Francisco Gutiérrez de Mazuelas, Luis Manrique de Lara, Pero Díaz de Espinosa, Diego Mexía, Rodrigo de Rojas, Pedro Sánchez de Verdec, Fernán González de Angulo, and others. Final approval of Barahona's petition is dated Dec. 23, 1561, and signed by Licenciados Jara, Mujaraz, and de Puebla; additional signatures by government officials from the city of Granada, the Audiencia of Granada, and the town of Archidona, are dated July 15, Sept. 15, and Sept. 27, 1562, respectively.
