Summary
Official copy, dated July 10, 1576 in Granada, of a "carta executoria de hidalguia" granting nobility status to Juan Baptista de Gatica of Seville. Gatica's request for nobility status, presented before the Audiencia de Sevilla on May 8, 1573, is rejected on June 26, 1573, on the grounds that he is only a "pechero" or one who must pay taxes, that he, his father Juan, and grandfather Pedro are not legitimate, and that the family did not pay taxes on some occasions only because of rumors of connections to powerful people. Witnesses for Gatica, whose depositions appear in the record, include Francisco Lopez de Utiel, priest at the church of Santa Marina in Seville; Pedro de Limpias, pharmacist; Alonso de Pareja, carpenter; Juan de Moya, attorney; Luis Hernandez, clothing merchant; Manuel Perez Vallestero; Cristoval Cano; Fray Diego Perez de Gallego, age 43, a Dominican priest and childhood friend of Gatica; Diego Hernandez de Vargas, silversmith; Juana de Porras; Juan de Salazar, physician; Diego de Alcala, notary; and Antonio Jimenez Garrido. Gatica's petition is granted and signed on July 10, 1576. Appended to the "carta" is a copy of a letter from Gatica concerning 21,075 maravedies which he paid in taxes in 1575, and for which he would like a refund, given his new status as "hidalgo." The mayordomo of the city is ordered to make the refund, although the money seems never to have been paid. A second letter of Oct. 1, 1584 from Gatica's son, Alonso de Caceres Gatica, contains a follow-up request for the money.
