Summary
Printed diary for 1884, with handwritten entries for 1 Jan.-1 Nov. made by José Rizal as a twenty-three year-old student of art and medicine in Madrid. The entries contain Rizal's descriptions of his meetings in the cafés of Madrid with friends such as the Paterno brothers, Esteban Villanueva, Graciano López Jaena, Eduardo de Lete, and Valentín Ventura; his medical classes at the University and drawing classes at the Academia de San Fernando, as well as student strikes and protests; outings to the theatre; and references to political topics. There are frequent references to the "Círculo", a society of Filipino residents of Madrid, founded in 1882, whose publication, "Revista del Círculo Hispano-Filipino" was strongly anti-Spanish. In addition, Rizal mentions books by Horace, Dumas, Voltaire, and Eugenio Sue--El judío errante--and records his daily expenditures for items such as food, paper, stamps, laundry, and trolley fare. Personal remarks and amorous references are written in code, several of which refer to Rizal's fiancée at that time, Leonor Rivera. In his entries of June 5-30, Rizal notes his university exams in Greek, Latin, history, and medicine. His last two entries, for Nov. 1 and 2, describe a farewell party for his friend, the painter Juan Luna, and Luna's departure for Paris.
