Summary
Manuscript, ca. 1914, concerning the history of the 1872-73 Modoc War, written from the Indian perspective. Also includes a history of Modoc-white contact beginning in 1848. Individuals prominently featured in the narrative include Captain Jack, John Schonchin, Alfred B. Meacham, Rev. Eleazer Thomas, Gen. E.R.S. Canby, Frank and Winema Riddle, Bogus Charley, Boston Charley, Black Jim, Hooker Jim, and Scarface Charley.
Biographical/Historical Note
Half-Modoc Indian, son of T.F. (Frank) Riddle, originally of Kentucky, and Winema or Toby Riddle, his Modoc wife. A witness to the events of the Modoc War, Riddle learned to read and write when he toured the U.S. in 1876 with Col. Alfred B. Meacham. Riddle later married the daughter of Chief Schonchin and settled on the Klamath Indian Reservation in Oregon.

93we will do good work today I know you people better every time I meet you. I know I will be able to make you seethings right today. you will see as I see. I am willing and ready to help you people. Jack I know you are a smart man that is the reason I want you to come to my terms and make peace. it is bad to fight. be a man and live like one. as long as you live in these rocks you wont be liveing like a man. you will be looked up on as a bad man. and will say further. the great father at washington said I will not let Capt Jack live where he is in the lava bed. he has been in Trouble with my children. I will have to find him and his people a new home. a good home where he wont have any more trouble. you see the great father said that he has got many many many soldiers he will make you go he sent me Dr Thomas and Meacham here to see you and talk good to you and make peace. you do what I want you to do. these Soldiers wont shoot you. But if you act mean. and wont listen to me and these men pointing at Thomas and Meacham. may be great father will Say. My soldiers go in lava beds get Capt Jack and all his people make him come out. if you kill all these soldiers
