Summary
Nine autographed letters, dated 18 January 1861-22 November 1862, from brothers Roswell F. Plummer and Pardon D. Plummer to their brother Lyman J. "James" Plummer in Woodville, New York. Eight letters are written from Plum River, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, before Roswell and Pardon enlisted in the 92nd Illinois Infantry Regiment. The ninth letter was written from the front lines of the American Civil War in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The letters cover the brothers' lives on the frontier in northwestern Illinois, including hunting and fishing trips, killing wolves for bounty, country dances, and family news, as well as news of the Civil War. One letter includes a postscript from the brothers' mother imploring James not to go to war. The ninth letter written from Nicholasville includes a chromolithographed letterhead vignette printed in Cincinnati entitled "The girl I left behind", which depicts a Union soldier comforting a weeping woman. Also included are 2 illustrated cards with verses and a stamped envelope addressed to "Mr. L.J. Plummer".
