Summary Diary kept by James B. McCreary documenting his service with his Kentucky regiment of Confederate cavalry and his experiences as a prisoner of war. McCreary discusses sympathy for the Confederate cause, recruiting activities, scouting and patrols, bushwhackers and Yankees, life on the march (including the hospitality of Southern sympathizers), skirmishes and battles (Hartsville, Elizabethtown, etc.), and the destruction of bridges, rails, etc., along the route of the raid into Indiana and Ohio. He also describes his life as a prisoner at the 9th Street Prison in Cincinnati, the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, a tent camp on Morris Island in Charleston Harbor, Fort Pulaski, Ga., and in transit via steamer and schooner. Of particular interest are McCreary's comments about Morgan's escape from the Ohio Penitentiary; prison routine, accomodations, and diet; exposure to fire during the bombardment of Charleston Harbor; and the Negro regiment guarding the prisoners at Morris Island. Also two newspaper clippings (one regarding McCreary's later political career) and a handwritten roster of the members of a cavalry company.
