Summary The John Howard Payne Papers primarily relate to the Cherokee Indians between 1794 and 1841 (bulk 1814-1841). This extensive collection contains fourteen volumes of manuscript notes, memoranda, incoming correspondence, and unpublished works. The subject matter includes among others the political and social history of the Cherokee nation, accounts of religious customs, myths, and legends, and government relations and treaties with the United States. 
Biographical/Historical Note John Howard Payne, actor, editor, and diplomat, was born in New York City in 1791.

User-Contributed Transcription communion season at that place. We had a interesting day. One child was baptized, six persons were propounded for admission to the church at the next sacramental meeting which will be the second sabbath in May. It must certainly be encouraging to the board to hear of the turning to the Lord who are brought to the knowledge of the gospel by the labors of their Missionaries. I must bring my letter to a close as there are others who wish to write. As you have so much to accupy your time we cannot expect answers separately but should be pleased to have you say a few words to us in a letter to Mr. E. Yours with respect, Mary A.
