A Visit to Blannerhasset's Island Some young people were desirous of having a hay day celebration, accordingly they made preparations to go upon Blannerhasset's Island. Having assembled at the proper time and place they all crossed the river together; some to visit that celebrated Island for the first time and to actually see the ground on which once stood the palace of Blannerhasset. Thus remains nothing to speak of its former beauty as it was destroyed by fire many years ago and no one of the family was left in these parts to keep the yard in order, so it grew up to weeds trees etc. But there is a well the remains of a gatepost and a cellar to be seen which we examined carefully and then made our way to some trees under whose shade we rested and chose our Queen, one whom every one thought beautiful and accomplished enough to receive the crown which was a wreath of wild flowers that we gathered upon the Island. The Queen was but seventeen years old and yet she seemed to be matured in mind and body. She won all hearts to her by her gentle manner and pleasant conversation and when rambling around upon the Island every flower that was found was presented to her and she would give its language and analyze it besides making other remarks which were very interesting to everyone. We called at a house that stands on the Island not far from the place which we had selected for our resting place to get some water and were invited to enter. We did so and found the inmates of that house consistent if but one old man
