Some correspondence and documents concern travel to California begun in 1849.

By making these exertions as Ruth did to promote the welfare of others the good feelings in our own breasts will be strengthened, enabling us to perform our duties more cheerfully and causing our souls to become purer, and better fitted to enjoy the scenes of life. Besides a good and noble character will thus be formed, one which will follow us wherever we go and when mingling in the world to glean whatever we wish will find for us favor in the sight of all and those who have to spare will be eager to have us glean in their fields.J.C.
