Dear Jack, -

It was a happiness to hear from you, tracts & all.
The gigantic machine, the Univ. of Michigan, has gone onto a tri-semester schedule; so this is not only 2 weeks vacation but interval, between two rushed semesters. I'm grateful not only for the rest but for the opportunity to write, which has always - in worst days - lifted me above the academic assembly line long enough so that I could go on.
This morning I finished an essay; & some time today I'll resume work on underlined: The New England Conscience, a book two-thirds written & already accepted for publication. - Like most of my writings, the conscience book has been written as a personal exercise in exorcism.
