Summary
An unpublished and incomplete manuscript written by James A. Jones in 1830 while residing in England. In this manuscript titled "Warfare of the North American Indians," Jones describes several examples of Indian tribal warfare in order to illustrate Indian bravery and fortitude. The last ten pages of the manuscript contains a vivid account given by an English captain of the capture of Fort William Henry in N.Y. during the French and Indian War and the subsequent massacre of English soldiers and civilians by Indians allied with France.
Biographical/Historical Note
James A. Jones, author and editor, was born in Tisbury, Mass. in 1791. Jones's childhood was influenced by the neighboring Gaylord Indians from whom he learned a variety of legends. He later incorporated many of these stories into his major published work Traditions of the North American Indians, or Tales of an Indian Camp (1829). Jones lived in England from 1829 to 1831 and returned to the U.S. where he eventually edited papers in Baltimore and Buffalo. He died in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1854.
