She has been working hard lately and was tired before she began helping to carry on the circus. didn't see any of it as all but the parade was at night & had no one to go in with. I bought a ticket for Wm Pickett, the younger boy, and when he was through weeding and I offered him the ticket in pay, he refused to take it. Said he would be whipped if he went and James said they were going to Ft. Meade with his older brother "on a vacation," so they couldn't go. I gave the ticket to Mrs. Renfro to give to anyone, and I paid Wm 20 cents for his weeding. I had to pretty nearly stand over him and point out the weeds to get the job half-decently done. At first he wanted a match so he could smoke. I gave him a stick of gum instead and he kept complaining that he must go home else he'd get whipped. I asked him who would whip him at that hour - just after school. He said "My Dad." But he wouldn't be home now, if he's working." He insisted that he would, so I gave up. I called the Mayor again a day or two before that and he sent a man
