Biographical/Historical Note
In 1818, at the instigation of his father, Chicago pioneer John Kinzie, John Harris Kinzie secured a clerkship at the American Fur Company headquarters in Mackinac, Mich. He remained there five years, learning the languages of the Winnebago, Wyandot, and other tribes, as well as the fur trade and merchandising business. Before settling permanently in Chicago in 1834, Kinzie served as private secretary to Lewis Cass (1826) and as an Indian agent (1828-1833). In Chicago, Kinzie held various federal posts including registrar of public lands (appt. 1841), receiver of public money (appt. 1849) and Union army paymaster (appt. 1861).
