User-Contributed Transcription Sabbath eve Dec. 3rd 1843 My own dear sister, Lucy I was made truly gladby the reception and perusal of another kind letter from you this P M by the hand of brother Marshall, but will first answer the one of Nov. 19th. In that you say that you have not written me for a long time because you thought your letters were not acceptable. I acknowledge with shame that you had to much reason to think so, though in reality this was not the case. Lucy I am confounded and almost overwhelmed with painful regret, mortification and confusion of pain by a view of my life and conduct for a year past. I do not wonder that, when I was so openly denying an attachment to the friends of the Saviour by my too friendly intercourse with the ungodly, you thought any communication of a religious character would be unacceptable: but whatever my feelings might have been if you had written me perhaps it might have been the means of bringing me sooner to myself. These were months of fancied ( but not without many misgivings and deep relenting of conscience) enjoyment but O have been far from any thing like happiness. I would rather be allowed one hour of real penitence at the foot of the cross or one moment of rejoicing and prayer for the conversion of a soul to Christ, than an age of such worldly-mindedness and folly. O, if I ever knew any thing of the love of Christ or felt any interest in the advancement of his kingdom, how far
