Summary
Incomplete copy of the proceedings of a treaty conference held at the German church in Easton, Pa., on Jan. 30, 1777, betweeen representatives of the Continental Congress and Six Nations. Proceedings are written, signed, and dated Feb. 6, 1777, by Thomas Paine, secretary to the commission. Document lists participants and contains speeches by Captain Johnston of the Senecas, representing the Six Nations, and a commissioner, professing friendship and discussing gifts. Also postscript regarding the Indians' need of a blacksmith.
Biographical/Historical Note
On Jan. 30, 1777, commissioners George Walton and George Taylor, who were also delegates to the Continental Congress, entered into a treaty with the Six Nations (representatives of the Seneca, Cayuga, Munsee, Conoy, and Nanticoke tribes). On Feb. 27, 1777, the Committee on Indian Affairs of the Continental Congress disapproved the agreement, ruling that neither party had the authority to conclude a treaty, and referred the matter to the commissioner of Indian affairs in the Northern Department.
