Summary Account of the surprise, capture, and occupation of Fort William and the town of St. John's, Newfoundland, by French forces under the command of Saint-Ovide de Brouillan (a lieutenant governor of Placentia or Plaisance, Newfoundland), Dec. 31, 1708-Apr. 7, 1709. Pickering provides a detailed description of the attack, treatment of the inhabitants, ransom negotiations and terms, destruction of English property and fortifications, and departure of the French. He also gives casualty figures.

Biographical/Historical Note Capt. John Pickering was a Portsmouth, N.H., resident and military official. He also served as Portsmouth representative to the New Hampshire and Massachusetts assemblies at various times from 1680-1709.
