Summary Accounts of John and Ulrick Tobler, May, 1758-July, 1760, with the province of South Carolina, for expenses incurred prior to, during, and in the aftermath of South Carolina Governor Lyttelton's late 1759 expedition against the Cherokees. Document contains three separate accounts: 1. expenditures for provisioning and entertaining Cherokees, Creeks, and Catawbas prior to the conflict, for supplying and encouraging Chickasaw warriors to join Lyttelton's forces, and for feeding men at the fort; 2. "Return of Men draughted by order of his Ex[cellen]cy Governor Lyttelton & continued there in Garrison from Nov 26 1759 to Jan 3 1760"; 3. expenses of the Toblers in "receiving and providing" for families who had fled the enemy, May 5-July 28, 1760. There is also a contemporary copy of the first account.

Biographical/Historical Note Prominent trader at New Windsor, S.C., near Augusta, Ga., and almanac author. Tobler arrived in South Carolina in 1757 as the head of a party of Swiss emigrants, and established a store at New Windsor, where he traded with the Indians. His son, Ulrick, who was a partner in the store, a deputy surveyor, and justice of the peace, was killed by Cherokee Indians on Feb. 15, 1760.
