Summary
Report dated 1700 of the committee appointed by the Connecticut General Court to hear and transmit the complaints and prayers of Oweneco and Ben Uncas concerning the settlement of Colchester. Oweneco and Ben Uncas state that they had never sold any of the land to "Mr. Foot", and despite a gubernatorial proclamation, lots had been laid out by Foot and others. The Indians ask the Court to appoint persons to "perambulate the said bounds as agreed upon" in 1694, to follow the articles of confederation between their father, Uncas, and the Court, and to sequester 200 acres near Deep Brook for the Mohegan hunting lands. The document is signed by Samuell Mason, Wm. Whiting, Ebenezer Johnson, Ephraim Minor, and James Avery, Interpreter.
Biographical/Historical Note
In 1699 an intoxicated Oweneco, the sachem of the Mohegan Indians, sold the Mohegan hunting grounds for a few shillings to Nathaniel Foot and a company of purchasers intending to establish Colchester, Conn. Considering the purchase illegal and unfair, Oweneco and his brother, Ben Uncas, complained in 1700 to the Connecticut General Court. Four years later a commission appointed by Queen Anne determined that this tract, among others, should be returned to the tribe.
