The Day After Don's Birthday
2 AM
Dear Slimbo:
It seems I'm always writing to you on some Mexican fiesta/holiday or other! Have just now put Don to bed SOBER after celebrating his birthday. The big news here is that Don has joined AA (12 days ago). It took a little persuasion but he has a nice guy for his sponsor — and he's take to it like a duck to water. He has to go to a meeting (2 hrs. every evening) which cuts into his TV watching but I'm sure he enjoys his meetings more than he did the poetry meetings in Chicago. Tonight, being his birthday, I went with him, and even cold sober I really enjoyed the speakers. One guy was better than any I ever heard at the College — and last week I heard a hard-boiled dame of 65 (ex-waitress, widow of a truck driver) who has probably the largest vocabulary of racy slang in the world. Wish I'd had the tape recorder with me — but it would have been illegal. They're not all of them that great, but I was lucky the 2 meetings I've been to. However, I'm not going on the wagon myself.
