User-Contributed Transcription Things for the bath room. Mr. Stevens is booked to begin the plumbing work Wednesday. I hope he wont be as slow and expensive as my carpenter is. It is something terrifying how carpenters charge - seven to eight dollars for eight hour days and I note that Jackson, whom we have now, is not at all particular about hacking 1/4 to 1/2 hour slices out of that. Saturday when I went down to lay in my Sunday supplies I stopped to see Mrs Rogers and to take her a few mangoes before the crop was gone - found her in bed - she had suffered the previous night with her right side - was keeping hot water bottle on it - feared appendicitis - had sent for Louchton. Sunday afternoon I called again to learn the outcome of Louchtons visit. Found her quite comfortable, in fact almost jubilant because Louchton had said appendix did not have to be removed. He had kept an ice pack on her abdomen all the previous night, Came home by way of Ten Eyck to see how her Ten Eyck was coming on. Less than two weeks before we had been there and though Mrs J - had said he had been better for several days I came away feeling that life was "all up" for him. He was so ashen colored his eyes so set and expressionless that I could almost see the grim monster at his back. It fairly took my breath yesterday when I saw him sitting up, with clothes on, on the side of his bed looking so very natural. One thing that has boosted him and Mrs J - too is, they recently got returns for their fruit $1600 -- plus. They are the only people I know who at present are in love with our Exchange. I was not down to see any of the Fourth. Ruth and Victor were with us from Saturday evening until after Supper Monday. Besides I was already feeling so depressed over Byrum that I had no heart for festivities. Our good friends, the three families who sold their homes on Viola are to have their property titles returned [writing goes up the right hand margin] to them this week. I talked with Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins for a few minutes yesterday.
