Place Illinois-Chicago, Lake, Michigan, Michigan--South Haven

Description The photograph on the postcard dates to circa 1903 or 1904 as evident by having her original two-toned hull and three pairs of lifeboats. But the postcard itself was published after July 24, 1915. After the 1904 season, the Michigan Steamship Company painted the hull white and added a fourth pair of lifeboats. The Michigan Steamship Company owned the Eastland from 1903 to December 1905 and ran a 77-mile route on Lake Michigan between Chicago, Illinois, and South Haven, Michigan. Print caption on the back of the postcard reads, "The Ill-Fated Eastland, which turned turtle in the Chicago River, July 24, 1915, at 7:30 A. M., causing the death of over 1200 persons, mostly women and children." Postcard published by Max Rigot Selling Company, Chicago, Illinois.
