Summary Contemporary copy of a resolution, Feb. 27, 1789, taken from the minutes of the commission, "the Treasurer of the Monies in his hands subject to the Order from the Board in favor of Richard Varick, pay to John Tayler, Agent to this Board, the Sum of two thousand Pounds." The copy is written and signed by Egbert Benson.

Biographical/Historical Note On Mar. 1, 1788, an act of the New York state legislature appointed Gov. George Clinton, William Floyd, Ezra L'Hommedieu, John Lawrence, Richard Varick, Samuel Jones, Egbert Benson, and Peter Gansevoort, Jr. as "Commissioners to hold Treaties with the Indians within this State." This board was to preserve friendly relations with Indian tribes, negotiate the purchase of Indian lands, and investigate the unlawful purchase or lease of Indian property. At the commissioners' first meeting, Mar. 3, 1788, they appointed John Tayler as agent of the board in Albany.
