Summary Report of the Oct. 15, 1802 [?] meeting of the committee on Indian concerns of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends. During an earlier meeting of the Baltimore Friends, two members, George Ellicott and Gerard T. Hopkins, were appointed to visit the Miami Indians, in order to instruct them in agriculture and husbandry, and to try to persuade them to adopt an agricultural way of life. Ellicott and Hopkins, along with Philip Dennis, make the trip to Miami territory west of Fort Wayne near the St. Joseph and the Wabash Rivers, between Feb. 23 and May 27, 1802, and exchange ideas with the Miami chiefs Little Turtle and Five Medals. While Dennis stays behind to work with the Indians and to teach them how to use agricultural tools, Ellicott and Hopkins return to Baltimore in May. Their report, read at the Oct. 15 Friends meeting, concludes that the adoption of farming by the Indians will be a gradual process.
