Summary
Annual report by Navajo agent D.M. Riordan to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Hiram Price, written Aug. 14, 1883 after Riordan had submitted his resignations. The blunt report outlines the "gross wrongs perpetrated by the government on the Navajos and on the Navajo Agency." Riordan complains that there was little government aid for the sick, helpless, and indigent; no provisions, transport, or decent shelter; no clerk or police; no proper implements to work the farm; inadequate school facilities; and a sawmill with no protection from the elements. In addition the agent notes that he made numerous trips around the reservation, freed slaves, and attempted to stop horse and sheep theft.
Biographical/Historical Note
