Summary This collection of typescript (carbon copy) records from the Board of Indian Commissioners was part of Edward E. Ayer's personal papers. Ayer served as one of the Indian Commissioners from 1912-1919. The records include the following four documents: Minutes of the meetings of the Board of Indian Commissioners, 1869-1917; Reports on reservations and schools, 1915-1919 (Bulletin no. 49); Returned student survey, 1916-1918 (Bulletin no. 24); and Memorandum on peyote for the members of the Board, 1915?.

Biographical/Historical Note The Board of Indian Commissioners was established by a act of Congress in 1869. This Board functioned as an independent agency of the federal government serving as an adviser on Indian affairs to the President, the Department of the Interior, and the Congress. After sixty-four years of service, the Board was abolished in 1933.
