Summary Three albumen photographs by architectural photographer R. Capes of the interior of the John Crerar Library in the Marshall Field building in the Chicago Loop district. The photographs have been mislabeled as the Newberry Library.
Biographical/Historical Note The John Crerar Library is a public research library for the natural and social sciences located in Chicago, Illinois. With an endowment from the estate of wealthy industrialist and businessman John Crerar, the library opened to the public on April 1, 1897, in the Marshall Field building in Chicago's Loop district. In 1921, it moved to the northwest corner of Randolph Street and Michigan Avenue. By the 1950s, the building had become too small and operating expenses too high for the library to remain. Its directors contracted with the Illinois Institute of Technology to provide library services, and the Crerar Library moved to the IIT campus in 1962. However, the facility became inadequate, and the library directors consolidated the collection with the University of Chicago's science collection in a new building in Hyde Park which opened in 1984. The John Crerar Library retains its name and status as a free public library.
