Dear Conroy:
Just a word to let you know that in
spite of appearances you are not by any
means off my list. I was happy to have
your card at Christmas time. It happened
that in the middle of our card-writing my grand-niece
up in Columbus was taken very sick
and we had to leave in some haste. The child
is much improved now.
Then too I had mislaid your address which
I knew was about the house or office somewhere
but could not locate. I asked Em
for your address in my latest letter to him
and he furnished it in yesterday's mail. He
gave me also the news of your [?] I had
not had for some time.
We are all of us by way of becoming elderly
men now. All that life failed to teach
us in our youth we shall surely learn
soon. I was much affected by the news of
your bereavement, an experience which I
know you will find it hard to bear and
impossible to forget. The only satisfaction
we mortals ever enjoy we derive from our
relations with each other. So far as I am
concerned that is the whole Gospel, the Law
and the Prophets. Once a golden thread
is broken there remains no longer any
