story. I often think he even approaches
the spontaneous humor of Mark Twain.
There is a story in that book about
a man and a camel which was
recalled by your fireman's dog. It
is true that the element of "marvelous"
as the French say, is less marked in
Dandet[?] because there the exaggeration
has to do with the strange, obstinate affection
of the camel for the man.
This type of literature is old in
history. In the old metrical romances
the French had a form they
called a "gab." The "gab" was the
ancient version of the tall-story. I
have read them in Old French, as for
instance, the romance known as the
Pilgrimage to Constantinople. When
