A year ago this Christmas I don't know
whether you heard from me or not. A few
days before the holiday we lost our
mother. She had lived happily here for
some fourteen years with me. Clearly as I
understood the inevitability of it, this
tragedy affected me more deeply than
I can say. I am still trying to find myself.
I sometimes think that in spite of our logical
strictures about the matter there is a way
in which we survive. After my father's death
I was strangely impressed by the number
of his traits which I began observing in
myself for the first time. Before the
mirror, as I shaved of a morning, I noted
gestures that were outright like his. I decided
at last that perhaps in a manner
he went on living in me.
There is an element of self-deception
in this, I know, but it is not all false. We
are all part of a line and the line, if not
infinite, is indefinitely prolonged. The
most unfortunate feature of human life is
that, no matter how brilliant a man may be,
he can never actually plan [?] comets from
outer space will get in the way! Often
with devastating results.
What I am saying beyond the assurance
of my deepest sympathy is, I know, quite
futile. Nevertheless I wanted to have
