Description Correspondence between Christopher Gardner Pearce, who was a Mississippi steamboat captain, and his wife Jane Ann (Sackett), beginning during their courtship in 1839 and continuing until 1851, the year in which Jane Ann died. The letters discuss a variety of subjects, including Pearce's life on the river, Jane Ann’s domestic life in Cincinnati, business, religion, politics, and family news and gossip. Also included is Pearce’s obituary from 1882, and a 1943 newspaper clipping that reprints a large check that Pearce wrote to a grocer in 1865. 
User-Contributed Transcription Louisville March 5th/44My Dear Wife,We arrived here about daylight all safe, nothing here of any consequence to replenish our poor trip - We shall leave for St. Louis at 9 O'clock this morning -- and think by going ahead we may get a good trip back from St. Louis, as that is our only hope at present --I hope you will be very careful and not take any more cold, you had better continue to take such drops as  Doct. W. may recommend for your cough. - I shall be as expeditious as possible in makeing the trip. I think you may look for about the 15th inst. --My love to all the family, and a kiss for yourself and our little Daughter. -- Your sincere & Affectionate HusbandC. G. Pearce
