Summary
Unsigned, undated copy, probably from 1868, of an ordinance issued by Jacques René de Brisay, governor of New France, on Feb. 28, 1686 in Québec, imposing sanctions on Englishmen, French deserters, and other unauthorized traders and trappers doing business in Acadia and other parts of New France. De Brisay advises all governors, garrison commanders, and troop officers of the illegal activities of many Englishmen, deserters from the French army, and "couriers de bois" who transact business with the Indians without official permission, and without proper passports and papers. He orders all officers under his authority to apprehend such traders, and to confiscate their merchandise and pelts. In addition, any bottles of liquor beyond the ten per person allowed by law are to be seized and emptied. Officers must inventory the merchandise seized, and note the date and place of confiscation.
