Summary Undated, unsigned order of 1780 from Patrick Sinclair at Michilimackinac, now under British rule, to Capt. Charles-Michel Mouet de Langlade, in charge of a detachment of Indians, to proceed to Illinois country to assist in the capture of St. Louis from the Spaniards. Langlade is to take his men in canoes down the Chicago ("Chicagout") River from Milwaukee ("Milvaki") to Cahokia ("Kahokia"), where he is to remain at least a month to reinforce the English garrison there, and to assist them in attacking the Spaniards. He is also advised to set up camp with his men in Kaskaskia ("Cascasia") along the Mississippi. En route to Cahokia, Langlade is to capture the Illinois village of L'Epé, and to take whatever provisions he needs from the Indians there. On the return trip, he is to take all their cattle--leaving behind not even a single cow--and as many horses as he needs. Sinclair also authorizes Langlade to buy canoes if necessary for the return to Michilimackinac or La Baye.
