Dear Jack:
9/4/83
Lindy Lou brought your Christmas card over (she only loves a half mile down the pike) - so sorry to hear about Gladys (as was Joyce, who just came into my den "The Marxist-Leninist Institute", & said to be sure to say hello to Jack & express her sympathies). Was she laid to rest in the Conroy plot in the cemetery hard by the storied Monkey's Nest mine? I know Joyce (or myself) is going to have to deal with this some day & I don't know if I could handle it after 38 years (In our case) you sort of become an extension of each others self.
How long had you been married, where was she from & where did you meet? Also, what about the shoe factory where she worked & the circumstances of its closing?
Hope to hell I can get back there this year (after the spring thaw) & spend some time with you - have many things I would like to ask you, etc. (How do you get to Moberly by bus if that is my mode of travel?)
Took you advice and didn't weigh little Whitney Ann down with "Das Kapital" for he 1st Christmas - but I did give her a phonograph record of animal songs by Pete Seeger. . . .
Enclosing something you may wish to put on your den wall. By the way, do you still have copies of the "Fast Sooner Hound" - if so, how much are they? Have a couple of grandchildren with birthday's coming up. Also, does Court's still have your "Reader"? (at 17.42?)
Take care of yourself and "Non carborendum illegitimi"!
Salud,
Harlan-
p.s. Let me know soon on "Reader" availability - Grandson Clint will be 16 In Feb
