Description Three photographs showing different aspects of the N. W. Harris Loan Program at the Field Museum in Chicago. The first shows the truck used in the 1940s to transport circulating exhibit cases to the schools| the second shows a preparator at the museum constructing one of the cases| the third shows children viewing one of the cases in their classroom.

In 1911, N. W. Harris gave a gift of $250,000 to the Field Museum to establish an extension program for the public schools. The basic idea was to create small, portable exhibits on natural history and anthropology topics that would circulate to Chicago area schools. Cases began to be distributed to the schools as early as 1913. Family members continued to give generously to the program over the following decades, and the program continues to this day.
