Norman Dwight Harris was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 25, 1870, the son of Norman Wait Harris and Jacyntha Vallandingham. He was known professionally as N. Dwight, and to his family and friends as Dwight. He married Jennie Cormode Going (1877-1936) on June 19, 1901. In 1938, he married Vera Going (1894-1949), and on March 29, 1950, he married Sylva Winholtz (1900-1979). None of these marriages produced children.

Between 1915 and 1928, N. Dwight Harris served as the chair of the department of political science at Northwestern University. He died on September 4, 1958. (For further details on his career see item HFF 05.20.)
