Summary Mortgage contract for the properties of Palluau and Pontchartrain granted to Antoine Buade de Frontenac and his wife, Jeanne Secondat, for payment of debts. The first part of the contract, dated Feb. 26, 1606, and signed by Frontenac, his creditor M. Florien Desgougers [?], and notary witnesses, describes the chateau, cellars, bridge, gardens, and tenant lands of the Pontchartrain and Palluau estates which serve as collateral. The second part of the contract, dated April 1606, is signed by notaries named in the document, as well as by Frontenac's wife, Jeanne Secondat, who acts as his proxy at the official execution of the documents in Paris.

Biographical/Historical Note Father of Henri de Buade, a member of Louis XIII's entourage, and grandfather of Louis de Buade de Frontenac, governor-general of New France between 1672 and 1682. Antoine de Buade, chevalier of the order of Saint-Esprit, served as Henri IV's personal equerry for several years before being appointed governor of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and "premier maître d'hôtel du Roi." The family took the name "Frontenac" from its fief, situated in Guyenne, France, between Agen and Castillones.
