User-Contributed Transcription She told of other things too, - how policemen are forced to graft in order to keep their jobs - how they were obliged to favor the ward bosses if they didn't want to be moved from one side of the city to another - etc. Jailer Whitman spoke mostly on the informed methods of dealing with prisoners, the medical examinations made which showed diseased minds and bodies which prompt them to commit crime. he says that 50 per cent of all the people sent him as prisoners are suffering from some disease or are in need of some severe surgical operation. A great number of complex operations are obliged to be performed every week at the Detention home.  I will see if I can get your money from Kennedy. We spent a pleasant evening at cards yesterday at Mrs. Andrews' daughter's house. Her husband is an artist. He draws pictures for many of the magazines such as Life, Judge, Everybody's, etc. he showed us a number of them and they are really very fine. His name is Herndon.
