Biographical/Historical Note German photographer and emigrant to Mexico considered to be one of the founders of Mexican pictorialist photography. Born in Germany in 1882, Hugo Brehme arrived in Mexico in 1908 with his wife and began to take photographs of the region. Although he expected his visit to be brief, Brehme spent the rest of his life in Mexico. His early photographs were documentary. Notable early subjects include the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s. After the revolution Brehme developed a pictoralist style, making impressionistic views of the Mexican landscape. Many of these photographs, including those of remote, mountainous regions, were published in his critically acclaimed collection México pintoresco (1923). Brehme published photographs in magazines such as National geographic and Mapa and in books about Mexico until his death in 1954. Throughout his career, he supported himself by producing and selling photographic postcards of various sites and landscapes in Mexico.
