User-Contributed Transcription It is rather a foolish business this going to College without backers, rich father's or something of the kind. I never would advise a young man of my condition to go to College, without I considered him a read geniusunderlined, such a one as I never saw, and he had better stay away then he would do well enough anywhere. besides the miseries of College would probably destroy him, before he got through. It is too bad for as decentunderlined a fellow as I thinkunderlined myself to be to suffer quite as much as I do from povertyunderlined Since I have been in College, 18 months, I have earned by my own hard labor $180.00, and hadunderlined $50.00 besides. My expenses in all, 5 journeys between here & Bangor, to Turner, Richmond &c &c. $40.00 Dress I had hardly any clothes at all when I came here. "60.00Books & Stationery only. 20.00Room furniture & Incidentals 25.00Board 35.00Postage 6.00College Bills 84.00 not all paid __________Total Expenses $270.00Income "230.00 ___________Besides being poor -- $ 40.00Of course I am somwhat in debt now, and getting deeper & deeper, every day I forgot $10.00 Society bills, about, which makes it $50.00 in debt instead of 40,00
