Wed. Eve. Jan. 28th, 1857
Dear Brother Eliah
By mail this afternoon came to hand your kind letter of Jan. 15th; also one from Samuel of Jan. 16 or 17th. For both of them I am heartily obliged to the respective writers. I was very glad to get these letters, but no more so than two others which arrived at the same time from Elyria.
I have by no means decided to go into the Ill. Central R.R. Co. employ as coal manager. Probably shall determine to have nothing to do with it. Not however from the reason you suggest - that the $1500.00 per annum is small pay. It is rather large pay for the office; larger than $2000.00 as a R.R. Engineer, or Superintendent; probably about equal to $2500.00 There is quite a difference. The Engineer or Superintendent belongs to the R.R. Co. not exactly "body & soul"; but day & night, waking or sleeping, his whole existence is in a measure merged in that of the R.R. he seems to have no separate life, feeling, or interest.
The coal manager, on the other hand, has got no Rail Road, with its interests & responsibilities of life & property
