Dr DeWitt had made a very effective speech against hasty action - the necessity of knowing more about any minister before we gave him a call. (You know this church once settled a pastor, who within a year or two was deposed from the Ministry for stealing his sermons.) Thereupon Mr Gates and I.S. Metcalf, appeared to know every thing and told every thing of & about Mr Holmes; and no one could do the same or really knows much any thing about Mr. Kenyon.
Then his coming from Princeton old school is against him especially congregationally. But he certainly is a splendid preacher. Doubtless much superior to Mr Holmes in that respect at least.
Thereupon 33 to 18. It was apparently unanimously voted to request the Society to write in requesting Mr Holmes to come and preach as stated. Supply for one year with a view to settlement eventually as Pastor.
