User-Contributed Transcription Your last letter, of Oct. 28th 31st was received on Tuesday last, and has done me good all the week.  When commencing ityou seem to have just received a piece of letter from me writtenat Pinckneyville.  Did I not write to you the result of the Curlee vs. Reyes trial? The verdict, although a mixed one, various points beingconsidered, and variously decided, was in favor of Mr Reyes: avoidingto Curlee less than Mr Reyes had offered him a year before.  Besidesthat the interest was not allowed, which was a loss to Curlee of some70 or 80 dolls.  You say you felt cross having a canker sorein your mouth.  I do not believe it, that is the crossest itwas all in your imagination.  I have plagued you, and dared you toit enough to know.  Being cross is an exploit of which you are entirelyincapable.  You had better "meekly" give up all pretentions to it.You would I know if you could hear me snub some of these Suckers, occasionally , so as to know by observation what Cross is.  I amvery sorry for the canker though.  Hope it is all well.  I am afraidyou and Mother do too much work, & get tired.  Why do you havea cold?  Be careful - Hire some help in the house, if you needit in the least.  Getting home here last night, I found lettersfrom Bangor, Samuel, Eliab & Lucy.  Lucy only one page thoughand you know she is the news writer.  Little Charlie is there, came downfrom Milo the only passenger on stage.  Coach & four all to himself!  Eliab& Maria comfortably housekeeping & all well.  Eliab & Samuel wrotevery fully of their business.  They have got along much better thancould have been expected.  It has you know been a very hard timefor business men everywhere.  They seem to me to have been unusuallyfortunate.  With such hard times in the business world; thechances appeared decidedly against them.  Especially as Samuel'slast winter Lumber failed to come to market, and the twenty or twentyfive thousand dollars owed to Pendleton to Ross by Furber & Bradeen put itout of the power of so 'P. & R. who were relyed upon as the backers of Furber
